The Grand Mosque in Makkah has expanded its network of mobility and accessibility services for elderly pilgrims and people of determination, with dedicated golf carts, slow-paced Tawaf paths and a range of on-the-ground support now in place. The measures aim to make the rites of Umrah and Hajj safer and more manageable for those who cannot navigate the crowds unaided.
The services reflect a broader effort to ensure that age or disability does not prevent a Muslim from completing the pilgrimage. Authorities have layered several forms of assistance, from vehicles to trained volunteers.
Golf carts and dedicated Tawaf paths
Dedicated golf carts for elderly pilgrims and people of determination operate on the Mataf roof, the upper level set aside for circumambulation. According to reports, the carts run for 12 hours daily, from 4:00 pm to 4:00 am, at a charge of SR25 per person.
On the ground floor, four allocated Mataf paths are designated for slower-paced Tawaf. These lanes give pilgrims who move more slowly a protected route, reducing the risk of being caught in the fastest-moving crowds during peak times.
Together, the rooftop carts and the ground-floor lanes offer more than one way to complete Tawaf. Pilgrims and their families can choose the option that best suits their mobility and comfort.
Support along the route
Beyond the Mataf itself, one prominent route runs from the arrival point at Shi'b Amer through to Bab Al-Fath, with support available along the way. According to reports, this includes volunteers pushing manual carts, directional signs for people with disabilities, white canes for the blind, sign-language interpreters and a volunteer medical team on call around the clock.
This continuous chain of assistance is designed so that a pilgrim who needs help is not left without it at any point between arrival and the prayer area. The presence of a round-the-clock medical team adds a safety layer for those with health conditions.
Wheelchairs and cart services
Free standard and electric wheelchairs are available inside the mosque through the General Presidency. A wheelchair-pusher service can be arranged at the entrances or through a pilgrim's Hajj operator, and a free cart loan service is available at exits 309 and 343.
These services matter for families travelling with elderly relatives, who may not be able to bring their own equipment. Knowing that wheelchairs and carts are available on site removes a common source of anxiety before the journey.
Practical tips for pilgrims
Pilgrims who need mobility assistance should identify the nearest relevant entrances and exits in advance, including exits 309 and 343 for the cart loan service. If travelling with an operator, arrange wheelchair-pusher support ahead of time rather than on arrival.
For those planning to use the rooftop golf carts, keep in mind the operating window of 4:00 pm to 4:00 am and the SR25 charge, and plan Tawaf accordingly. Families should agree a meeting point and keep any medication and identification close at hand. With advance planning, elderly pilgrims and people of determination can complete their rites with far greater ease.
